cellular automata (ca), a discrete model consisting of a grid of cells, each in one of a finite number of states, evolve in synchrony according to a set of localised rules. each cell’s state in the next generation is determined by the current states of its neighboring cells. the dynamics of ca, driven by deterministic or probabilistic transitions, manifest behavior that distorts the perceived simplicity of its foundational rules. patterns become from initial configurations. either stable structures, defunct chaos, or perpetually mindless cyclical oscillations. that is to say, infinitely trapped. it may be forever. it may cease completely. we observe minute, localised processes become self-organizing systems; living and breathing. we become the micro and the macro. the simple and the complex. the known and the unknown.
